Posted: 03 Sep 2007 I wonder if you good folks could advise on any titles that may be available covering slow worms? Preliminary searches on amazon etc have yielded no results. I'd really appreciate your help on this one. Many thanks in advance. All your bass are belong to us |

Posted: 03 Sep 2007 Could try 'Lives of British Lizards' by Colin Simms (out of print) but does turn up on eBay. Has an entire chapter titled 'No legs' devoted to the beasts, and is informative and excellent reading - alternatively, any of the New Naturalist series on British reptiles and amphibians - early series by Smith, then by Frazer and finally by Trevor Beebee & Richard Griffiths. I,m sure Dave Bird could maybe supply you with a more extensive list of publications/papers more specific to slow worms ! John Newton South Yorkshire ARG |

Posted: 04 Sep 2007 Some others you could look for include Snakes and Lizards by Tom Langton, a book for beginners but has plenty of interesting information on British species. Lizards of the World by Chris Mattison is a detailed guide and has 4 references to slow worms plus info on other similar species of legless lizard. Donald Streets book 'Reptiles of Northern and Central Europe' was first published in 1979 and has an 11 page chapter on the slow worm. Dave |

Posted: 04 Sep 2007 If you're interested in captive care, Dave Billings wrote an article on the subject for the BHS Bulletin in the 80s- Dave Bird may well be able to get you a copy or a scan. Another suggestion is 'Lizards of The British Isles' by Peter Stafford, in the Shire series- very slim, but correspondingly cheap. |

Posted: 05 Sep 2007 Look for 'David Bird' in the member list. I think there was another BHS Bulletin article in the 90s about growth rates in juvenile slow-worms that may have had some pointers on rearing them- I'll see if I can dig it up. |
